243 is a small logic puzzle that fits on a 3×3 grid and takes about three minutes a round. The twist is that the board loops: push a tile off the right edge and it reappears on the left, exactly like a dial turning. Nothing is ever lost, so a game is never wasted — only the 99 moves are finite.

It is free, runs entirely in the browser at play243.com, and needs no download, install or account. Phone, tablet and desktop all work.

The rules, in order

  1. One tile on the board wears a blue ring. Only its row and its column can move.
  2. Left and right arrows spin that row. Up and down arrows spin that column. The blue rails outside the board mark the live line.
  3. Anything that leaves an edge re-enters from the opposite edge on the same move.
  4. Three tiles of the same value filling a complete row or column fuse into a single tile in the middle cell, worth three times as much. Two matching tiles side by side do nothing.
  5. Your goal is a 243 tile within 99 moves. Nothing on the board climbs higher, so 243 ends the run.

The value ladder

Every merge triples the value, so the ladder is short and it is the whole game:

243 is the top of the ladder. Getting there takes four clean merges stacked on top of each other, which means keeping the board tidy enough that a third matching tile always has somewhere to land.

Questions about 243

Is 243 free to play?

Yes. The game runs in your browser at play243.com with no download, no install and no account. Open the page and the board is ready.

How is 243 different from 2048?

2048 slides the entire board and doubles pairs. In 243 only one row and one column move at a time, the grid loops so nothing falls off the edge, and tiles combine only when three matching tiles fill a full line. Values climb by tripling: 3, 9, 27, 81, 243.

Which row and column can I move?

Only the row and column belonging to the ringed tile. The blue rails outside the board show which line is live. Every move also moves the ring, so the live line changes constantly.

How do tiles combine in 243?

Three tiles of the same value must fill a complete row or complete column. They then fuse into one tile in the middle cell worth three times as much. Two matching tiles side by side do nothing.

How many moves do I get?

99 moves per game. Reaching a 243 tile before they run out wins the round. 243 is the highest tile the board can hold, so it is the finish line rather than a checkpoint.

Can I play 243 on a phone?

Yes. Swipe directly on the board to spin the live row or column. On a desktop, use the arrow keys or WASD, or drag across the board with the mouse.
